Francis Edwards Peters

(ولد في 23 يونيو 1927، مدينة نيويورك )

وهو أستاذ فخري للتاريخ والدين والشرق الأوسط والدراسات الإسلامية في جامعة نيويورك

ولد بيتر في مدينة نيويورك، وتخرج من المدرسة الثانوية في مانهاتن عام 1945. وقضى أربع سنوات في فترة التدريب في سانت أندرو في هدسون في هايد بارك، نيويورك ثم درس في جامعة سانت لويس لمدة ثلاث سنوات، وحصل على درجة البكالوريوس في عام 1950، وماجستير آداب في اللاتينية واليونانية في عام 1952، وكذلك على الليسانس في الفلسفة منحها المعهد البابوي في روما.

اشتغل بالتدريس لمدة عامين 1952-1954 في كانيسيوس في مدرسة ثانوية في بوفالو، نيويورك، وحصل على شهادة البكالوريوس في دراسات اللغة الروسية من جامعة فوردهام في عام 1956،

واكمل الدكتوراه  في الدراسات الإسلامية في جامعة برنستون في عام 1961. درس في جامعة نيويورك في الفترة من 1961 إلى 2008. تدريب في كل من الدراسات الإسلامية والدراسات اليونانية والرومانية الكلاسيكية، وقال انه يعتبر نفسه عالما في الدين، ولا سيما الدراسة المقارنة في اليهودية والمسيحية والإسلام.

في جامعة نيويورك كان قد شغل منصب رئيس كل من الكلاسيكية والإدارات دراسات الشرق الأوسط. لقد كان أستاذا زائرا في عدد من المؤسسات الأخرى، بما في ذلك عدة في الشرق الأوسط فضلا عن عامة اللاهوتية في مدينة نيويورك.
