جون جيرارد بورتون

John Garrard Burton

(19 سبتمبر 1921-2005)

مستشرق بريطاني ، محاضر في الفن والعمارة من الهند في كلية الدراسات الشرقية والأفريقية (SOAS).

وقال انه كان محررا، ووله مساهمات وافرة، في الطبعة الثانية من موسوعة الإسلام انتري 1960 و عام 1995.

وانخفضت مساهمات بورتون الصفحة إلى موسوعة الإسلام إلى ثلاث فئات رئيسية هي: مشاهد الإسلامية والمعالم الأثرية. السلالات الإسلامية. وأنماط البناء الإسلامي. هذه المساهمات اعيد نشرها في جمع بعد وفاته تم بواسطة تلميذه السابق جورج ميشل.

حياته :

توقفتدراسته بسبب الحرب العالمية الثانية. وخدم في الهند وبورما .

 بعد أن أصبح يجيد اللغة الهندية والنيبالية، عاد إلى إنجلترا دخل كطالب في كلية وادام أكسفورد لدراسة اللغة السنسكريتية. بعد تخرجه في عام 1950 ذهب إلى كلية الدراسات الشرقية والأفريقية كمحاضر مؤقت في النيبالية. مكث في SOAS لأكثر من ثلاثة عقود، في وقت لاحق كمحاضر وقارئ باللغة الهندية،

 واصبح اهتمامه متزايدا في التاريخ الهند والتاريخ الإسلامي والهندسة المعمارية.

واصل الكتابة والتدريس بعد تقاعده الرسمي .
