أستاذ بقسم الدراسات الأوراسية الوسطى , أستاذ مساعد، قسم لغات الشرق الأدنى والثقافات , أستاذ مساعد، قسم الدراسات الدينية في جامعة إنديانا بلومنجتون.

حصل على درجة الدكتوراه في عام 1985 في جامعة إنديانا، ومنذ ذلك الحين واصل إجراء البحوث حول الإسلام في آسيا الوسطى، وخاصة الصوفية وأبعادها السياسية والاجتماعية. وقد نشر دراسات رئيسية لدين آسيا الوسطى وتاريخها باستخدام مصادر المخطوطات الفارسية والعربية والتركية التي تراكمت بشق الأنفس من مجموعات في جميع أنحاء العالم. حتى عام 2008، شغل منصب مدير معهد بحوث دينور سينور للدراسات الآسيوية الداخلية في جامعة إنديانا. حصل على زمالة غوجنهايم في عام 2003، وكان اسمه كارنيجي سشولار في عام 2006.
