2013- A diachronic study of sources on the celebrated but little studied 9th century mystic Abū Yazīd al-Bisṭāmī (Bāyazīd) and his heritage in later Islamic mysticism. This comprises an intra- and inter-textual study of hagiographical and non-hagiographical sources, which has two aims: firstly, to gain a clearer picture of Bāyazīd’s life and thought, and to assess his impact and influence on later Sufis.

Continuing comparative study of Sufi commentaries on Sūrat Yūsuf. Having so far looked at five Sufi commentaries dating from the 11th-14th centuries CE, focusing firstly on the way that the emergence of love mysticism has affected interpretations of the figure of the prophet Jacob in the Qurʾanic story of Joseph, and secondly, on hermeneutical developments that appear in Sufi exegesis over this period, this research is continuing with the examination of several later Sufi commentaries on Sūrat Yūsuf, in order to investigate further the way in which this Sura has provided Sufis with particular scope to expound their doctrines through scriptural exegesis.

2013-14 A study of adab as a concept in early Sufism, this involved an examination of the Kitāb ādāb al- nufūs of Ḥarith al-Muḥāsibī, the Kitāb al-Riyāḍa and Adab al-nafs of Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī, and the numerous sayings of Sahl al-Tustarī preserved not only in his tafsīr but also in the collection of his sayings known as Kalām Sahl b. ʿAbd Allāh. It also took into consideration sayings of early mystics cited in the Jawāmiʿ ādāb a-ṣūfiyya Sulamī, and chapters on adab in the Kitāb alLumaʿ of Sarrāj, the Tadhhīb al-asrār of Khargūshī and the anonymous 5th/11th century work know as ʿIlm al-taṣawwuf.

2007-10: Revision of draft translation of the Qurʾān commentary of Sahl b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Tustarī. Referred to three MSS in order to correct errors in published edition, wrote lengthy introduction on Tustarī’s life and thought, added full annotation and prepared analytical index.
