عضو هيئة التدريس في جامعة ميشيغان، دراسات الشرق الأدنى والدراسات اليهودية،
أستاذ الدراسات الإسلامية في قسم دراسات الشرق الأدنى.
حصل على درجة الدكتوراه من معهد الدراسات الشرقية (فرع لينينغراد) من الأكاديمية السوفيتية للعلوم في عام 1986. ومنذ عام 1991 كان يعيش ويعمل في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية (لفترة وجيزة) في بريطانيا. وتشمل اهتماماته البحثية التصوف الإسلامي (الصوفية) والفكر اللاهوتي الإسلامي والفلسفي والقانوني في المنظور التاريخي.
وقد تناول عمله الأخير تقلبات الحركات الإسلامية / الإسلامية في السياقات المحلية (وخاصة في اليمن وشمال أفريقيا وروسيا وشمال القوقاز).
لديه العديد من المنشورات الأكاديمية حول هذه المواضيع، بما في ذلك سبعة كتب. وهو يعمل حاليا على تكملة التصوف الإسلامي (2000) الذي يناقش الأدوار المجتمعية والتعليمية والثقافية والسياسية للتعاليم والصوفية والممارسات والمؤسسات الصوفية في العصر الحديث وما بعد الحداثة.
مشروع كتابه المقبل، مبدئيا بعنوان الإسلام والإمبراطورية في شمال القوقاز، وسوف تدرس استخدامات الإسلام من قبل الجماعات المتنوعة عرقيا في شمال القوقاز باعتبارها أيديولوجية المقاومة للغزو الروسي والهيمنة اللاحقة للمنطقة (من 1820s حتى اليوم). أجرى الكسندر كنيش أبحاثا ميدانية في اليمن في 1986-1989 و 1999 مع إشارة خاصة إلى عبادة القديسين كموقع للتنافس بين أتباع التدين اليمني التقليدي وخصومهم "الأصوليين".
