فيرجينيا هوكر هي زميل الأكاديمية الأسترالية للعلوم الإنسانية (فاها)، وهي حاليا زميل زائر في قسم التغيير السياسي والاجتماعي، كلية آسيا والمحيط الهادئ، في الجامعة الوطنية الأسترالية. وهي تنشر على الإسلام في العالم الماليزي الإندونيسي منذ عام 1970.
تقاعدت من كلية الدراسات الآسيوية ، الجامعة الوطنية الأسترالية في يناير 2007. وقد ركزت أبحاثها على الإسلام في جنوب شرق آسيا، والأدب والتغيير الاجتماعي في ماليزيا وإندونيسيا، والثقافة السياسية الإندونيسية. كتابها الأخير، شارك في تحريره مع الدكتور جريج فيلي، هو كتاب مرجعي الحائز على جائزة عن الإسلام المعاصر في جنوب شرق آسيا.
وقد نظمت مؤتمرات دولية حول الإسلام في جنوب شرق آسيا (1993 و 2000) مع أعمال الثانية التي نشرت في عام 2004 كما وجهات النظر الإسلامية في الألفية الجديدة (شارك في تحرير مع أمين سيكال). وقد ساهمت بثماني مقالات في موسوعة الموسوعة الإسلامية (إي. ج. بريل، هولندا)، فضلا عن الموسوعات الماليزية. كما أنها عضو في لجان العلوم الإنسانية التابعة لمجلس البحوث الأسترالي وشاركت في عدد من المراجعات للدراسات الآسيوية في أستراليا. وهي معروفة بمساهمتها في تطوير الدراسات الآسيوية، وخاصة دراسات إندونيسيا، في أستراليا
وفي الفترة ما بين عامي 2003 و 2009، قامت بتنسيق برنامج خاص لتبادل القادة المسلمين بين إندونيسيا وأستراليا (بتمويل من معهد أستراليا الاسترالي، وزارة الخارجية والتجارة). وقد منحت منحا كبيرة لتقديم برامج تدريبية بحثية للخريجين لأعضاء هيئة التدريس من الجامعات الإسلامية الإقليمية الاندونيسية.
وكانت عضوا في مجلس معهد أستراليا الأندونيسية لمدة ثماني سنوات وعضو سابق في مجلس الشؤون الخارجية التابع لوزارة الخارجية والتجارة (2000-2003). وقد انتخبت زمالة الأكاديمية الأسترالية للعلوم الإنسانية في عام 2003.
