حصلت على شهادته الجامعية في جامعة برانديز ، ودرس التاريخ الأوروبي والأمريكي والدراسات اليهودية.
خلال السنة الجامعية الأولى بصفته باحث فولبرايت زائر في جامعة لندن ، تعرف على كل من التاريخ الإسلامي والشعر العبري المكتوب في إسبانيا المسلمة ،
وقرّر اختيار مجال بحثه : تاريخ اليهود الذين يعيشون في الأراضي العربية في الشرق الأوسط.
أكمل الماجستير في التاريخ في جامعة كولومبيا ، تليها أربع سنوات من التدريب في يهودية الكلاسيكية في المدرسة اللاهوتية اليهودية وقد نال الدكتوراه في نفس المؤسسة.
كتابه الأول ، وهو دراسة عن أصول مؤسسة مهمة للحكم الذاتي اليهودي في العصور الوسطى في مصر ، يقوم في المقام الأول على وثائق القاهرة جينيزا ،
وفي عام 1983 طلب منه أن يساهم بكتابة سلسلة جديدة من المقدمات الأساسية للتاريخ والثقافة اليهودية ليتم ترجمتها إلى اللغة العربية للقراء في دول مثل مصر.
فنشر كتاب (نظرة عامة على الحياة اليهودية في مصر الإسلامية خلال منتصف القرن الرابع عشر) ولعله لا يزال الكتاب الوحيد من نوعه في اللغة العربية الذي كتبه متخصص في التاريخ اليهودي.
